Cafe du Monde, French Quarter, New Orleans

The famous Cafe du Monde has been in existence since 1862, located across from Jackson Square. Growing up, our father would open up a yellow canister of coffee beans, and fill his grinder and he would have me press the button to grind them.  Low and behold, the coffee was from Cafe du Monde. We had to bring home beignet mix for the family.

Cafe du Monde is a cash only establishment, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There is a take out counter, indoor seating and outdoor area covered by the CDM tent. A lot of the servers were very friendly and were originally from Bali, Vietnam or were local folks from New Orleans. We found this so intriguing and wondered how some of these South East Asian and Pacific Islanders found their way to New Orleans.

$.14, $.33 or $.64 are the price endings. We are not sure why the price are not round numbers or $.99, but we hope it is for humor or to keeping prices manageable for customers versus marking it up rounding to the next dollar.

Cafe au lait, half brewed chickory coffee and half hot milk. Chicory is the root of endive lettuce which adds a great flavor to the coffee. Our travel companion had to have a cafe au lait almost every night of our NOLA visit. Each time our cups increased from small $2.14 to the larger size $3.64 and varied from decaf to caffeinated.

Under the heap of heavenly powdered sugar are the devilish fried square shaped doughnut. Three per order. If at there long enough, we could polish off two orders. Good thing we did not. Gluttony is easy with beignets.

We had to try the frozen cafe au lait $4.33. It was like a better version of the Starbucks Frozen Frappucinos.

Candy: Southern Candymakers, French Quarter, New Orleans

Southern Candymakers is located on Decateur and is famous for many sweet treats, but especially the sinful pralines. Who does not enjoy pecans enrobed in sugary caramel candy? The candy making counter. Usually there is a person scooping heap fulls of soft praline onto the marble.

Chocolate covered cherries and other chocolate dipped treats.

Croissant D’Or, French Quarter, New Orleans

Croissant D’Or is located in the former location of Angelo Brocato gelato  and has a beautiful courtyard to sit and sip coffee.

Located in the French Quarter on Ursuline, it is a few blocks from a convent and a “haunted” hotel. I love flakey, buttery croissants and D’or evokes gold and royalty to me.

The remnants of the Angelo Brocato legacy and former location.

What is most intriguing and causes pause for reflection is the alternative entrance for women. It makes me pontificate about women and gender issues. I recall when I visited the Canterbury Shaker Museum in New Hampshire, woman and men are separated, have different entrances and sit on different sides of the room.

Croissant D’Or serves hot croissant sandwiches, quiche, soup specials, coffees and pastries such as tarts, cakes.

Angelo Brocato Ice Cream, City Park, New Orleans

In the torrential downpour, we got of the cable Car past the Walgreen’s drug store and wandered to Angelo Brocato Ice Cream, the famous gelato eatery near City Park. Angelo Brocato was on my NOLA hit list for a while now not only for gelato, but for their Italian pastries.

There were so many flavors to choose from including amaretto, praline, pistachio almond,  baci, coconut, and apricot.Angelo Brocato pastries including cream puffs, Baba Rhum and napoleans.

The cucidati and fig cookies were absolutely amazing. They were either plain, covered in sugar glaze, rainbow sprinkles or almonds.

Cucidati is an Italian fig cookie and the better version of the Nabisco Fig Newton. Boy have I been missing out. The soft, lightly sweet fig filling with a crumbly lightly sweetened exterior.

Gelato

Roman candy is like a harder taffy candy rolled in wax paper, which comes in ice cream flavors vanilla, strawberry and chocolate.

Spumoni is a layered ice cream, with multiple flavors including chocolate and pistachio flavors.

Peach gelato was THE BEST gelato I have ever eaten. The peach flavor was so fresh and a genuine bite of summer.  I felt like was eating a perfectly ripened, sweet peach.

Sucre, Garden District, New Orleans

Sucre, located on Magazine Street is an adult Candyland. This whimsical sweet shop has the most adorable store front with hanging colorful ice cream scoops and cones.

We were very much tempted by the case of gelato, but moved straight for the macarons.
Sucre’s macaron flavors including chocolate, hazelnut, nectar cream, peaches and cream, orange, strawberry, almond and pistachio. The mini cakes were gorgeously decorated and so fun to look at.

The eclairs and tarts were also impeccably designed and were equally tempting.

The most impressive cake that caught our eye was the Hazelnut Latte cake. The side crusted with bits of hazelnuts was a nice touch.

We were impressed by the artful macaron trees.

We bought these soft nectar and lemon marshmallows and they were airy, flavorful and a real treat.
