I adore the Deluxe Town Diner in Watertown. When I heard that they had opened a second location in Newton Centre called Deluxe Station Diner, I was excited! I really love their sweet potato pancakes.
Could it have been an off day in the kitchen or perhaps the griddle is different from the Watertown location? They had a bitter aftertaste and smelled of coconut oil. We asked if there was any coconut oil used, but the waitstaff was adamant that there was no change in the original pumpkin pancake recipe.

My salmon Benedict came out okay. I wished the English muffin was toasted. The salad was fresh and the tangy dressing was simple and refreshing. The poached eggs were a bit overdone so the yolks were not as runny as I would have liked.
I will be getting my sweet potato pancake fix at the original Watertown location. If you’re in Newton Centre, I’d recommend walking across the square to Johnny’s Luncheonette and avoid the hectic crowds, long wait, and sparse tightly packed oddly placed seating. I’m willing to give this place another try for breakfast or brunch, but not during peak hours.
