La Bombonera, Old San Juan (Closed)

La Bombonera or “cozy sweet box” is a must visit when wandering Old San Juan.La Bombonera is one of the oldest restaurants on the island and serves  pastries, Cuban sandwiches, mallorcas, cafe con leche and freshly squeezed juice. La Bombonera is an institution and revered in Puerto RIco.

We had to take away several of  Puerto Rico’s favorite pastries, the flakey quesitos, a cheese filled pastry. There were also guava filled quesitos, our favorite.

The tournillos or cream filled horns and the thousand sheet or napolean pastries were tantalizing.

The cafe con leche was the perfect balance of strong and creamy.

We shared a plain mallorca with butter for $2.00 and a pressed mallorca with jamon, queso and dusted with powdered sugar.

The icing sugar initially sounded a bit odd on a savory sandwich, but the sweetness enhanced saltiness of the ham and American cheese ($4.95). The round Mallorca bread reminded us of a light, sweet Portuguese bread.

We were in awe of the retro green and white industrial juicer, pumping out fresh jugo de china (orange juice).
