About bakingmehungry

The adventures of two sisters and food enthusiasts who cook, bake, and eat anything, anywhere.

Wayfare Tavern Revisited, Financial District, San Francisco

We returned to Wayfare Tavern (BMH’s first visit to Wayfare Tavern) for a Sunday meal and new we were seeking an all American and cozy meal. The menu had exactly what we wanted, solid, comforting food.

We just love the decor at Wayfare. Dark wood, patterned wall paper and the feel like we are in a different time.

The table next to us enjoyed a Chilled Maine lobster with lemon-garlic butter and Steamed Prince Edward Island mussels $16 shaved tangerine, bay leaf, crème fraîche and uni butter. While we were deliberating and enjoying the silver plate table setting, we enjoyed some fresh popovers.

IMG_3310

These popovers are truly special. Crispy and flakery on the exterior and soft, custardy on the interior. We slathered them with sea salted butter and enjoyed every bite. IMG_3312

We enjoyed the wild mushroom soup with puffed barley, nettles, crème fraîche for $12. The soup was earthy, light from the creme fraiche and we enjoyed the crisp of the puffed barley. The slivers of radish offered a bite.

In fact, while waiting for our meal, we asked for another round of popovers and for some odd reason they never arrived. After reminding our waitress and a few servers, they arrived upon the entrees’ arrival.

We had to order the organic fried chicken again. That buttermilk brine is just unbelievable. The chicken is served with roasted garlic, crisp woody herbs and lemon for  $24. Truly one of the most delicious fried chicken dinners possible. The herbacious crust and skin is well seasoned, crunchy and addictive. We highly suggest this goodness to anyone.

The Wayfare Burger grass-fed proprietary grind, Marin brie, roasted onion, smoked bacon, brîoche was juicy and flavorful for $19. Instead of fries, we asked for onion rings and a side of mayonnaise. Solid.

IMG_3324

We considered the chocolate cream pie for dessert, but just did not have room. Instead, the kitchen sent out two perfect bites of sour cream coffee cake with a candied nut. IMG_3326

We had leftover burger and fried chicken and decided to take them home. We received our “takeaway ticket” and collected our take home bag from the host stand. Waiting for us at home were two additional  popovers. Touche. We couldn’t be more thrilled. They were just as good toasted again the next day. IMG_3329

HRD’s Smokin Grill, North Beach, San Francisco

HRD‘s Smokin Grill is an awesome Asian Fusion  diner that has Southern bbq decor. Owners JoJo and David Yeung created mostly Korean inspired sandwiches, rice bowls and burritos. HRD was featured on the Food Network and the secrets the spicy Korean bbq marinade.

IMG_3294

HRD features so many items we want to try including the Mongolian cheese steak, Bibimbap, Sweet Chili Fried Chicken and Fried pork chop. We noticed the specials Spicy pork cheesy fries and Sweet and spicy fried chicken wings with fries sounded killer.

IMG_3295

The spicy pork burrito had kimchee, Korean bbq pork, spouts, bits of  kiwi surrounded by rice. The combination was so filling and half was definitely perfect for a snack.

We had to try the Sweet chili pork chops with fries and instead of the slaw, we asked for the curry mash potatoes. Those potatoes were tasty. The pork chops were nicely marinated, tender and the spicy chili crust was crispy, spicy sweet and tasty. Really unique and a must get.IMG_3245

Mo’s Grill, North Beach, San Francisco

We stopped by Mo’s Grill for some bfast and waiting 30 minutes for our seats. We were told to get the famous Mo’s burgers, french toast or the old-fashioned pancakes (BMH’s Good Ol’ Fashioned Banana Pancakes), but we were in an omelette mood. Lined in the front of the grill were all the ingredients, mushrooms, tomatoes, lettuce and Hass Avocados.

Mo’s has a chill environment, neon lighting and bar stools. The main dining room area was packed and is a popular weekend brunch and lunch joint.

Our omelettes took a bit, however when the Mexican omelette arrived full of  sausage, scallions, jalapeño, salsa and cheese with a side of potatoes with bits of scallion and a toasted English muffin.

The egg scramble with scallions and cheese were great with the sides of toast and potatoes.

Next time, we will definitely try Mo’s Bacon Cheeseburger, California Burger or Blue Cheeseburger.Mo's Grill on Urbanspoon

Candybar, Hayes Valley, San Francisco

We love desserteries and Candybar in Hayes Valley, is our type of place. It is an adorable space and we loved the neon lights.

The dessert shop and bar was low lit, had fun art on the walls and a whimsical chandelier.

We loved the cubbies full of books and classic board games including Sorry, Uno and Battleship. Sounds like a great weekend evening “in”.

We enjoyed a  Jasmine Sparkle with sparkling wine, jasmine, lemon for $8. It was light, effervescent and floral.

The Lavender Honey Creme Fraiche Semifreddo Nutella Powder with Almond Brittle and  Cantaloupe for $9 was light, nutty and sweet. The dessert seemed very one note and we didn’t find it highly memorable.

Our favorite dessert was Peanut Butter Jelly Time! The chocolate Tart with peanut butter cream, salted candied peanuts  and blackberries for $9 was a sophisticated take on childhood nostagia. No Jiffy, Skippy and Smuckers here. It was the right combination of tangy, sweet and salty.

We would be back for the Passion Fruit Chocolate Mousse Cookie Crumble, Passion Fruit Gelee and Coffee Ice Cream dessert next time.

Bi-Rite Creamery, Mission, San Francisco

We had to return to Bi-Rite Creamery on a gorgeous SF weekend. Not only were we craving salted caramel ice cream, but we were looking for a new flavor. Of course, many other folks had the same idea and wanted ice cream too. We were prepared for the hour wait and were willing.

Some new being served included milk chocolate with peanut butter swirl, orange blossom with candied orange zest and pistachios, roasted banana and hazelnut with dandelion chocolate’s cocoa nibs. We loved the diagram on the sizes available.

The honey lavender and coffee toffee both looked quite tempting and were great samples. We decided on scoop of salted caramel and roasted banana. Both flavors were spectacular, deep in flavor and very pleasant on the palate. Both flavors were worth the wait.
