Vegetarian Sausage, Egg and Cheese Breakfast Sandwich

One of our most treasured recipes was introduced to us by our beloved. We love breakfast sandwiches, especially sausage egg and biscuit ones. For the past 7 years we have been making vegetarian sausage egg biscuit sandwiches with spicy mayo and it is such a nice treat to make on Sundays. The buttery and flakey biscuits cushion the spicy rich egg, mayo and soy pattie. Enjoy.

  • 2 eggs
  • 4 Gimme Learn vegetarian sausage
  • Honey Butter Grands Jr. biscuits
  • 2 slice of American or sharp cheddar (or veggie slices)
  • mayonnaise or Vegannaise
  • Sriracha

Heat up a frying pan. Pre-heat oven 400 degrees and bake biscuits per directions for 8-11 minutes. Shape vegetarian sausage into patties (using 1/3 of the package and set remainder for another batch). Cook two eggs in the frying pan with an egg ring. Gussie’s Chicken and Waffles, Western Addition, San Francisco

We are a huge fans of fried chicken, yes it is not great for you, but as children a bucket of KFC was a treat and a multi-year addiction was born. We have heard ravings about Gussie’s Chicken and Waffles and decided it was time.

All of Gussie’s waffles are homemade, cooked to order and served with sweet cream whipped butter and warm homemade brown sugar syrup. For an additional $1.00, one can get pure maple syrup, get the pure stuff. Although the menu offered so many combinations with eggs, other proteins, various types of waffles and chicken pieces, we went for the Downtown Special One southern fried chicken thigh or drumstick and one original waffle for $7.79. The chicken was super tender on the inside and nicely seasoned and crisp on the exterior. Supremely good. The waffle was the right thickness, and we can now understand why folks pair chicken with waffles. Salty, buttery and sweet, the taste trifecta.

IMG_2989The other item that is a must order is the buttery, flakey biscuits for an additional $1.00, these are equally addictive.

We will definitely return to Gussie’s to sample the Country Cornmeal Waffles, Cheddar Cheese Grit Cakes with scallion and Buttermilk Fried Chicken Strips served with honey mustard.

Hill Country Chicken, Gramercy, New York City

On our walk to breakfast we spotted folks walking into Hill Country Chicken and popped in for a quick breakfast. Although not pictured, the Sausage, Egg And Cheese Biscuit for $6.00 was buttery, savory and unbelievably good. The fresh cheesy eggs went well with the saltiness of the sausage patty. We vowed to return again for dinner and to sample the fried chicken.

There are two styles of chicken Classic or Mama’s Els’ Fried Chicken (skinless). We highly suggest ordering a Coop or meal deal with biscuit and sides at varying sizes and prices. The sides we sampled in line include the fried cheesy mashed potatoes (our favorite), corn salad and carrot-n-raisin slaw.

We loved the homey decor of the chicken joint. The plaid picnic and wallpaper, star light fixtures and cozy furniture was fun to look at._MG_3883

We ordered a pie cup (instead of a slices of pie) and a few pieces of chicken with a buttery biscuit. This was perfect way to share and sample the different chicken styles._MG_3884

The Thigh ($3.50) was super juicy and nicely seasoned. Mama El’s had a nice spice rub and crust, however we prefer the Hill Country Classic skin and all. One of the best parts on the tray was  that Buttermilk Biscuit, flakey, buttery and only $1.00.

Hill Country serves Apple Cheddar, Double Cherry, Banana Cream, Coconut Cream, Bourbon Pecan, Crème Brulee, Salted Margarita. Pig Pickin’, Whiskey Buttermilk. We decided on the Banana Cream pie covered in stars of whipped cream.

We have to return to try the chicken salad, tenders and pie shake (WE KNOW!)Hill Country Chicken on Urbanspoon

Elite Cafe, Fillmore, San Francisco

Elite Cafe has some solid Southern style brunch. We were pleased by the overall ambiance high ceilings, open space and semi private wooden benches. As we plopped down, we were impressed by all the Tabasco options from Habanero to Jalapeno.

We had to try a Meetinghouse Biscuit with Strawberry Butter for $1 each and a bowl of Cinnamon Sugar Doughnut Holes for $2.75. The biscuits were perfectly flakey, buttery and really special with the strawberry butter fruity and creamy flavor. The doughnut holes were mini dime sized donut holes and fun to pop in our mouths before our main brunch arrived.

The Corned Beef Hash was served in a skillet and was nestled  on the toasted biscuits topped with poached eggs and rich bechamel sauce. The poached eggs looked perfectly cooked and the hash was not a mix of potatoes, the hash was very meaty for $13.75.

The Alabama Scramble rocked. The nicely scrambled eggs was incorporated with bits of minced bacon with baked mashed potatoes, biscuits and gravy for $11.50. The biscuit and gravy combination was nicely buttery and savory and the eggs were fluffy and had a nice texture contrast with the salty bacon.

The Huevos Rancheros were really fresh and had a nice balance of beans, jack cheese, fried eggs, salsa, guacamole and cream for $11.50. The corn tortillas were so so and could be skipped.

Our only critique was after we were almost finished with brunch, we felt like we were being pushed out and they wanted to turn the table. We completely understand how busy and high demand a table was, but made the end of our brunch experience uneasy.

We would definitely return for the food when in the area. The Warm Goat Cheese and Leek Tart with Baby Arugula, Pink Peppercorn and Citrus Vinaigrette looks right up our alley. Next time.

Carolina Grits, Southern Barbeque Pork Roast and Garlic Spinach

I’ve eaten grits at some brunches and in New Orleans before. However, I have never made proper grits ever. I recently had the opportunity to have proper Carolina plantation stone ground grits and gave it a shot.

Carolina Grits From Carolina Plantation Serves 2

  • 2 1/4 cup of water
  • 1/2 cup grits
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 T butter
Mix ingredients in large sauce pan. Bring to boil over medium heat. Reduce heat to low, cover and simmer for 60 minutes, stirring occasionally. If grits become too thick, just add water.

Boiled over Carolina grits

  • 2 cups water
  • 1 bottle (16 oz) barbecue sauce, your choice
Add pork roast, water and sauce. Cover and cook 6 to 8 hours on low.
