Wayfare Tavern Revisited, Financial District, San Francisco

We returned to Wayfare Tavern (BMH’s first visit to Wayfare Tavern) for a Sunday meal and new we were seeking an all American and cozy meal. The menu had exactly what we wanted, solid, comforting food.

We just love the decor at Wayfare. Dark wood, patterned wall paper and the feel like we are in a different time.

The table next to us enjoyed a Chilled Maine lobster with lemon-garlic butter and Steamed Prince Edward Island mussels $16 shaved tangerine, bay leaf, crème fraîche and uni butter. While we were deliberating and enjoying the silver plate table setting, we enjoyed some fresh popovers.

IMG_3310

These popovers are truly special. Crispy and flakery on the exterior and soft, custardy on the interior. We slathered them with sea salted butter and enjoyed every bite. IMG_3312

We enjoyed the wild mushroom soup with puffed barley, nettles, crème fraîche for $12. The soup was earthy, light from the creme fraiche and we enjoyed the crisp of the puffed barley. The slivers of radish offered a bite.

In fact, while waiting for our meal, we asked for another round of popovers and for some odd reason they never arrived. After reminding our waitress and a few servers, they arrived upon the entrees’ arrival.

We had to order the organic fried chicken again. That buttermilk brine is just unbelievable. The chicken is served with roasted garlic, crisp woody herbs and lemon for  $24. Truly one of the most delicious fried chicken dinners possible. The herbacious crust and skin is well seasoned, crunchy and addictive. We highly suggest this goodness to anyone.

The Wayfare Burger grass-fed proprietary grind, Marin brie, roasted onion, smoked bacon, brîoche was juicy and flavorful for $19. Instead of fries, we asked for onion rings and a side of mayonnaise. Solid.

IMG_3324

We considered the chocolate cream pie for dessert, but just did not have room. Instead, the kitchen sent out two perfect bites of sour cream coffee cake with a candied nut. IMG_3326

We had leftover burger and fried chicken and decided to take them home. We received our “takeaway ticket” and collected our take home bag from the host stand. Waiting for us at home were two additional  popovers. Touche. We couldn’t be more thrilled. They were just as good toasted again the next day. IMG_3329

Hill Country Chicken, Gramercy, New York City

On our walk to breakfast we spotted folks walking into Hill Country Chicken and popped in for a quick breakfast. Although not pictured, the Sausage, Egg And Cheese Biscuit for $6.00 was buttery, savory and unbelievably good. The fresh cheesy eggs went well with the saltiness of the sausage patty. We vowed to return again for dinner and to sample the fried chicken.

There are two styles of chicken Classic or Mama’s Els’ Fried Chicken (skinless). We highly suggest ordering a Coop or meal deal with biscuit and sides at varying sizes and prices. The sides we sampled in line include the fried cheesy mashed potatoes (our favorite), corn salad and carrot-n-raisin slaw.

_MG_3879

We loved the homey decor of the chicken joint. The plaid picnic and wallpaper, star light fixtures and cozy furniture was fun to look at._MG_3883

We ordered a pie cup (instead of a slices of pie) and a few pieces of chicken with a buttery biscuit. This was perfect way to share and sample the different chicken styles._MG_3884

The Thigh ($3.50) was super juicy and nicely seasoned. Mama El’s had a nice spice rub and crust, however we prefer the Hill Country Classic skin and all. One of the best parts on the tray was  that Buttermilk Biscuit, flakey, buttery and only $1.00.

Hill Country serves Apple Cheddar, Double Cherry, Banana Cream, Coconut Cream, Bourbon Pecan, Crème Brulee, Salted Margarita. Pig Pickin’, Whiskey Buttermilk. We decided on the Banana Cream pie covered in stars of whipped cream.

We have to return to try the chicken salad, tenders and pie shake (WE KNOW!)Hill Country Chicken on Urbanspoon

Hong Kong Eatery Revisited Again, Chinatown, Boston

One of our family traditions is Hong Kong Eatery (BMH’s review of Hong Kong Eatery RevisitedVisit 1). One of our father’s favorites. Despite trying the Quincy location, he still loves the small, Chinatown original. The restaurant is always buzzing with a mix of single diners at a shared or community table and lots of families. We really wish we knew Chinese, and could understand the specials and items on the mirrored wall.

_MG_4323

We started with an order of Stir fried beef Ginger & Scallion, a father’s choice for $8.75.  This dish is as aromatic as it gets. The beef was so incredibly tender, the onions and scallion were translucent and glistening. All in all the ginger flavor was strong and had a bite, but went well with the sweetness of the tender beef. Must get.

_MG_4345

Another father order was Sweet and Sour Pork for $8.50. The pork was fried and then enrobed in a thick sweet and sour sauce. The sauce was tangy and went well with the bits of onions and veg._MG_4341

One of our favorites of the meal was the square bean curd with a center of pork and shrimp filling served with a five spice soy sauce. The tofu was nice and pillowy and had absorbed some of the the flavor of the shrimp. Toe coating on the exterior of the bean curd was lightly fried and the textural contrast was killer. _MG_4342

A friend favorite is the Beef chow fun, dry fried with sprouts, scallion, flat noodles and salty soy goodness. Great combination and hard to not have second helpings._MG_4340

You know its a good dining day when you have Hong Kong Eatery’s Half Roasted chicken for $8.50. Upon descending the restaurant’s entrance, one notices the window display of all the roast pork, peking ducks, soy chickens and roasted chickens. This one is tender and has a nice crust. _MG_4339Another family favorite is the salted fried calamari squid with tentacles! There is a nice salty flavor which brings out the calamari’s essence. You can’t beat the tentacle texture as well.
_MG_4338Our little brother’s favorite, and one of ours is the Beef and Chinese broccoli  chow mein for $5.50. The thin yellow noodles are fried and covered in the gravy. Bits of carrots, baby corn and chinese broccoli offer other elements of texture, sweetness and bitterness. The beef as always super tender (could not make tender at home). We heard baking soda is added to the beef to make it super tender, this can not be confirmed, but I believe it.

Another successful meal at HKE and if you visit, you will probably see one of the BMH clan there.Hong Kong Eatery on Urbanspoon

Naked Lunch, North Beach, San Francisco

Naked Lunch, located at Txoko Broadway and Kearny  is open only Tuesday to Saturday from 11.30am – 2.00pm. Txoko has happy hour from 5:30pm until 7:30pm. The chalkboard was really fun and just a reminder, the menu changes and the restaurant is cash only. The $3 Cinnamon Sweet tea looked interesting.
The tiny space is mostly the open kitchen area. The cookies and chiccarones looked quite tempting.
We had to order the Mary’s Farm Fried Chicken Sandwich Pain De Mie, Butter Lettuce, Early Girl Tomato, Garlic Aioli for $9.
The roll was perfectly soft and encased the fresh crisp lettuce, mayonnaise, acidity of the tomato and the nicely crusted, tender chicken. We dipped the sandwich in the buffalo sauce and we were golden.
We would have to return for the Grilled Skirt Steak Sandwich Crispy Taters, Sweet Onion, Arugula, Pickled Shishito, Horseradish Aioli for $10 or Potato & Leek Soup Chives, Goat Cheddar for $6.

El Porteno Argentinian Empanadas, Ferry Building, San Francisco

El Porteno’s pollo empanadas are a must purchase whenever we are near the Ferry Building. They flakey crust of the empanada dough and savory chicken filling with Fulton Valley all natural chicken, chicken chorizo, raisins and olives are unreal. A must get again and again.

The carne was also delicious with Prather Ranch Organic Dry-Aged Grass Feed Beef, pimiento stuffed olives, raisins and hard-boiled eggs and the Mushrooms (Champinones) with Fresh Seasonal Local Organic Mushrooms by Far West Fungi, Shallots, Parmesan Cheese, Crème Fraiche, however we still prefer the pollo.

The Fugazzetta (cheese & onion) with Aged Cheddar Shaved Organic Onions, Oregano was unreal. The layers of melted cheese and sweet onion slices were delicious. Perfection.

We had to have another pollo one. Could not resist. This one is one of the best meat ones.

There was an emapanada with mushrooms, chard and cheese and reminded us of a Greek spinach and feta pie.

Next time, we want to try the sweet empanaditas such as the Empanadita de Banana y Dulce de Leche Dulce De Leche with Bananas and Alfajores de Dulce de Leche (Argentine cookies joined together with dulce de leche).
