Tug Hill Vineyards, Lowville, New York

Established in 2007, Tug Hill Vineyards is owned and operated by Michael and Susan Maring. Their first vintage was released in Spring 2011 and they now offer more than 12 wines.

There is five acres at the vineyard for blueberries picking and also three acres for raspberries. After picking our own raspberries and blackberries, we would definitely do this another time to make another ganache cake. We were at Tug Hill Vineyards for one of the most popular Sunday Brunch options in North Country. The Sunday brunch is offered from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm.

We made a reservation to accommodate a group of eleven and highly suggest reserving a place on the screened in porch to enjoy the breathtaking views.

We received a gift of a bottle of White Out from their first vintage and paired it with a reisling jam and honey pork loin. White Out is an oaked ruby red wine made from locally grown Frontenac grapes. A semi-dry wine it boasts a distinctive cherry aroma and inviting palette of blackberry and plum for $14.99.

The mimosas, wine spritzers, Tug Hill Breeze and other alcoholic drinks are served until noon on Sundays. It is New York Law.

We loved the wooden ceilings and the overall aesthetic of the dining area. Rustic and very fun.

The table’s breakfast favorite was the pineapple stuffed french toast, the asparagus medley, bacon and herbed scrambled eggs.

The quiches were also a favorite and we sampled a broccoli, cheese and sausage one.

The olive and tomato quiche was very unique and was very delicious.

The dessert display was quite impressive and we had a difficult time deciding what to sample. There was fresh fruit, apple cake, kaluha whipped cream, strawberry baklava, blueberry mini muffins, cinnamon rolls and much more. The table’s two favorites was the strawberry baklava and apple cake. The mini muffins and fruit cobbler were good, but nothing memorable.

Needing to walk off the brunch, we walked the well manicured vineyard grounds, enjoyed the flowers and watched the volleyball games in the field area.

Below the dining and porch area is the Wine Cellar which sells wine related products and wine. We love our bamboo wine holder we received as a holiday gift. We purchased a case of 12 bottles (with a 10% case discount).

We did a wine tasting in the outside area, but within the Wine Cellar there are indoor tastings too. The pricing of the wine tasting was $3 for a 6 wines tasting and $5 to taste all their wines.

We actual gathered a lot of insight from the Boston based daughter of Marings who provided us with our outdoor tasting. She mentioned her parents actually created the Vineyard years later after she mentioned as a teenager she would love to own a vineyard one day. Her parents joked that she should meet a Californian boy and that’s how she’ll get her vineyard.  When she was in college, her parents sold their landscaping business and actually purchased Tug Hill Vineyards.

Our favorite was White Out and the 43 Lat Red Is a full-bodied red wine enhanced by “noble rot”, these dehydrated grapes produce very concentrated sugars. There are honey and spice characteristics,  The price of the bottle is $12.99.

Other folks in our party purchased bottles of LaCrescent Is a French American hybrid with a perfect balance of sweetness and natural acidity, its lush flavors and enticing aromas of citrus and pineapple ($14.99) and Tail Light Red is a sweet red wine made from Frontenac grapes. This fruity wine balances aromas of cherry and blackberry with a clean crisp finish for $10.99.

Symeons, Yorkville, New York

We have heard glowing reviews from several sources now who have visited Symeons on multiple visits and have enjoyed the Moussaka and other Greek dishes. We have tried Greek food in Chicago and Symeons beat Athena in Greektown, Chicago hands down.

Symeons faced a fire a few years ago, rebuilt and has continued to be so popular in the community. (Pun intended, not sure if it was a grease fire (Greece get it?!)

The calamarakia tiganita was one of the best fried calamaris eaten. The baby squid dipped in Symeon’s original batter and deep fried to a crisp golden brown and sprinkled with Symeon’s seasonings for $9.95. The perfectly seasoned batter was super light, lighter than Japanese tempura and really tasty.

The saganaki was a unique blend of bubbling Kasseri cheese and Greek sausages, seasoned with ouzo, oregano and lemon for $6.95. The greek sausages were aromatic from the fennel and had a nice chew. The cheese itself was hot upon arrival to the table, however started to solidify and become stringy for the lavash.

The Greek Salad was one of the best Greek salads we have ever eaten. The Crisp lettuce, combined with onions, tomatoes, Calamata olives and Feta cheese were exponentially special with the house dressing made with oil and vinegar based seasoned with Symeon’s Spice Mix for $4.95.The well marinated, super tender Chicken ka-bob was charbroiled and the skewer of green and red bell peppers, onions, yellow squash, and zucchini all were so delicious. The  rice pilaf sprinkled with lemon juice was heaven for $12.95.

The Lamb chops were a hit and the select cuts of fresh lean lamb chops were nicely charbroiled and garnished with lemon, Symeon’s seasonings, and stuffed grape leaves. The rice pilaf was exceptionally made, nicely flavored and had little bits of vegetables for $22.95.

Psari Sto Filo, a fresh haddock fillet, smothered in a creamy white wine, mushroom and cream cheese sauce, and wrapped in filo pastry for $15.95. The center filling was piping hot and continued to hold the temperature very well. The wine and cream sauce was very luscious and decadent. the haddock was very flakey and enjoyed the puff.

For our ride home, we ordered some sandwiches to go. All sandwiches are wrapped in Greek flat bread and dressed with tomatoes, onions and yogurt sauce. The gyro itself was really flavorful and had tender meat, however too much bread.

The Souvlaki sandwich, with marinated Greek Shish-ka-bob charbroiled for $5.95 was so good. We wish there were a few more nuggets of well seasoned shish-ka bob and less lavash. The Thracian chicken, marinated breast of tender grilled chicken was a disappointment and was a bit dry. The sandwiches overall had too much bread and not enough protein $5.95.

There are several dishes not pictured, that our group seemed to enjoy including the tilapia florentine was stuffed with spinach and Feta cheese, topped with Symeon’s pita bread crumbs and baked with a taste of white wine and served with rice pilaf for $14.95. The Melitzanes Yesmites Sto Fourno or baked eggplant casserole was very cheesy with Feta cheese, then layered with a medley of simmered vegetables, and topped with grated Kasseri cheese for $11.95.

Our little friend enjoyed some chicken tenders, three strips of battered chicken breast lightly fried with fries and yogurt sauce $5.95.

We were all quite happy and pretty stuffed, once our friendly and kind waitress asked if wanted to look at the dessert menu, we said we would take a look. Despite saying we would look, we ended up ordering a good selection from the dessert menu. Our absolute favorites were the baklava ice cream with a close second to the very unique baklava cheesecake for $5.50.

The baklava Ice cream made exclusively for Symeon’s by Roc Star Ice Cream in Waterville, NY for  $5.95. The baklava ice cream was truly unique. We loved the filo dough shell, the bits of walnuts and honey flavor in the ice cream and the whip cream topping.

The berry mousse of the day was light and delicious and reminded us of a fluffy strawberry ice cream flavor $4.50.

The chocolate baklava was overly sweet with the additional layer of chocolate. The chocolate made the Greek pastry of honey, chopped walnuts, filo because a bit too much to enjoy $3.95. Regular baklava would have been a better choice.

We would highly suggest Symeons for anyone in the area. A majority of the dishes were just so delicious and better than any Greek we have tasted. From the calamari, pilaf, kabob to the baklava ice cream, there were so many highlights that were some of the best we have enjoyed.

Marino’s Pizza, Lyons Falls, NY

One of the best pizza’s we have ever enjoyed is in Lyons Falls New York. We have heard about Marino’s for years with the superlative that is one of the best and we were in disbelief. How could a small village have the best pizza? Marino’s Pizza, next to Boonedocks and The Edge Hotel just does. The perfect balance of crust, aromatic sauce and cheese is why. Super gooey cheese, a great amount of acidity from the tomato sauce and an all around great pizza makes every bite delicious.

We often do carry out and pick up a pepperoni and onion pizza and this time around enjoyed a large pepper and onion pizza.

There were 40 wings, buffalo and bbq, with meaty wings and drumsticks and really nicely slathered sauces. Everyone seemed to enjoy the wings.

Lewis County Fair, Lowville, New York

We loved our prevoius trip to The Boonville-Oneida County Fair (BMH’s memories of Booneville County Fair) which is from July 23 – July 29. We were excited to return to upstate and enjoy the Lewis County Fair. The bingo games, the side show games yielded a Curious George puzzle, baseball cap and stuffed animal dolphin. We enjoyed some rides, the animals such as bunnies and cows.

For fair food, we had to have another swig of root beer, some of the best root beer out there and some fried oreos. We know there is fried butter, fried beer and we checked off fried oreos on our list (for the second time).

Boondocks, Lyons Falls, NY

Boondocks Restaurant & Bar is open 11:30am until 2am everyday and is one of the most popular restaurant bars in the area. There are extended hours and pretty solid all American fare. The appetizers and sandwiches were all pretty spot on.

We had the green token from The Edge Hotel to redeem and enjoyed some Labatt Light. There was also a serving of Swamp Water, a blend of Malibu Rum, Island Punch Pucker, Sour Mix and Orange Juice with a splash of Sierra Mist.

The Thousand Island Winery North Country Red was a grape juice with alcohol content. Super sweet and fun to drink, it was like juice.
The bread rolls were super fluffy and served with honey butter. We were very tempted eat them all. The rolls reminded us about Texas Roadhouse rolls, which we can not get enough of.

Two of our favorites dishes of the entire meal was in the APPETEASER section of the menu. (Love it).  The Loaded Cheese Fries loaded with cheddar cheese, scallions, chives and bacon with sour cream on the side were just like Papas Supreme (BMH review of Taco Bell, Plaza Las Americas and BMH’s rendition of Papas Fritas Fiesta Supreme Fries) for $6.75. We were happy with the crispy fries and mix of toppings.

The Breaded Portobello Mushrooms were nice and juicy on the inside and then nicely breaded on the outside. The sliced portobello mushroom breaded and fried to a perfect golden brown served with the special dipping sauce which reminded us of Thousand Island or chipotle dressing ($7.25).

The Rodeo Burger was a hefty 1/2 lb. burger. Although we asked for medium rare, our burger was medium-well. Still, the burger pattie was juicy and went well with the Chipotle BBQ. The huge square of Fried Muenster cheese was definitely unique and heaviness was cut by the fresh coleslaw $9.25.

The Over the Edge Chicken Sandwich had a crispy chicken served on a toasted garlicy hard roll topped (which tasted like garlic bread) with BBQ sauce, fried onion tanglers and fresh chipotle coleslaw $9.25. We were really happy with the combination of the crispy chicken cutlet, sweet bbq sauce and the texture of the onion and coleslaw. Great combination.

Of all our dishes, the only dish that was a bit underwhelming was the Chicken Cordon Bleu Chicken breast overstuffed with ham and Swiss cheese smothered in a creamy cheese sauce. The chicken itself was a bit dry, but what made up for it was the garlic and buttered vegetables. Some of the best roast vegetables eaten $15.95.

Later on that evening, we enjoyed a 100 ounce beer tower. Several nights later another Tower. Boondocks is our go to bar in North Country and are happy to patron it.
