Elizabeth Street Cafe, Soco, Austin

Elizabeth’s Street Cafe serves French Vietnamese cuisines such as crepes, pastries, banh mi, pho, noodles and coffee in a lovely atmosphere. Note Elizabeth’s is in the same restaurant family as Perla and Lambert’s.

The pricing is more than double the price of Vietnamese fare at the mom and pop shops I have been to, but this upcharge is certainly for diners that are seeking decor and ambiance.

Some interesting iterations of banh mi include spicy pork meatballs, grilled McAllen Ranch Flank Steak, Keffir Lime Fried Chicken and grilled lemongrass tofu for $7. The Elizabeth Street pho ranges in price from $12 to $22 (Shrimp, Red snapper, Dungeness Crab).

Butter cake, canelles and eclairs (nutella, pistachio and peanut) $3

Macarons and cream puffs (coconut, banana cream or espresso) $2

Zebra striped pillow with the seating and bar area

The Vietnamese Iced coffee being made and consumed (drip coffee and sweetened condensed milk) for $3.00. It was lightly sweet and had a deep coffee flavor. Perfection.

We ordered a canelle, banana cream puff and macarons.

The canelle tasted like a cross between bread budding and a dense flan with a caramel soaked bottom.

The chocolate chili macaron had a deep chocolate flavor with the spice coming through as the chocolate dissipates. The citrus flavored macaon was refreshing.

Next time, I will order the pineapple tatin with palm sugar ice cream, pineapple chips and star anise caramel for $8.

Candy: Big Top Candy Shop, Soco, Austin

Big Top Candy Shop is unlike any candy shop I have been to. Yes, I have seen plenty of stores with nostalgia candy, truffles, and fudge, but they do not have a soda jerk. Big Top’s proper soda jerk allows patrons to enjoy egg creams, floats, malts and shakes.

Nostalgia candy and European chocolates.

Memorabilia and antiques related to the circus.

Refrigerator, instruments, weights, posters and other antiques.

Hopdoddy Burger Bar, Soco, Austin

Given the tremendously long line at Hopdoddy, we knew we would be trying it during an off hour. We hopped into line, the waitress gave us a number and assigned us a seat in the dining room. As we ordered at the counter, we noticed how quickly we moved through the line. In fifteen minutes, our burger and fries were delivered to our table.

Hopdoddy serves fresh burgers, fries, ice cream. They grind the meat, in-house, daily.

Hopdoddy makes homemade milk shakes for $5. The flavors included, Oreo, Dutch Chocolate, Mexican Vanilla, Raspberry White Chocolate, Caramel & Sea Salt, Nutella & Chocolate Covered Pretzel. I definitely will try the Salted caramel sometime.

They also serve alcoholic beverages, hard limeades, sangria, margaritas, martinis, wine as well as cane sugar sodas.

They servce the best chili cheese fries we have ever eaten. These Kennebec potatoes fries with a side of chili cheese for $5.50 were worth every penny and then some. The fresh cheese sauce and chunks of chili flavored beef was so good. It is not your nightmarish rubbery chili cheese version from 7-11.

We shared the Magic Shroom burger ($8) Angus Beef, Texas Goat Cheese, Field Mushrooms, Mayo & Basil Pesto and it was juicy, thick and very fresh. We tried the complimentary sauces chipotle ketchup, honey mustard and barbeque sauce. The honey mustard with fries were awesome.

Amy’s Ice Cream, Soco, Austin

Amy’s Ice Cream was started by Amy Simmons in 1984 (who previously worked for Steve’s Ice Cream, while she was in college in Boston). Amy’s sells three sizes and we went the small size and the ice cream shop offers sugar and cake cones for free. For the larger two sizes, “Crush’ns” can be added.

After consulting with the super friendly staff (she wore a furry tail and a hat with ears), we settled on a Brittany’s Parade (Frosted animal crackers), Dreamscicle and White chocolate. It was a different ice cream combo and I rather liked it. The creamy orange sweetness and the smooth sweet white chocolate complimented each other while the animal crackers added texture. I’m looking forward to trying other combos.

The Mighty Cone, Soco, Austin

The Mighty Cone‘s origins began because of the Austin City Limit Music Festival. The ACL’s organizers contacted Chef Jeff Blank, who was famous for making an encrusted trout. Jeff created a less expensive rendition of his encrusted dish with chicken and spawned the crunchy chicken cone.

Chef Blank made the the cones available year-round and The Mighty Cone neon sign has been a permanent fixture in the South Congress area since early 2009.

The Hot and Crunchy is so unique and absolutely delicious. The chicken was encrusted in sesame seeds, almonds, chili flakes, sea salt, sugar and corn flakes. The flavor combinations were unreal. The crispy, nutty exterior with the tender chicken and mango-jalapeno slaw and ancho sauce makes my mouth water.

Next time, we are definitely ordering another cone, the chili-dusted fries for $1.25, sliders and shakes.
