Amsterdam Falafel, Davis Square, Somerville

Amsterdam Falafelshop is a franchise which originated in Washington D.C. After really solid falafel in France and frites in Belgium, we were thrilled for the chance to sample some falafel and fries from the fairly new Davis Square falafel shop.

Upon entrance, there is some fairly provocative art work. The tables have fun photographs of falafel shops in other countries.

Patrons can choose if they want a white or wheat organic pita as a sandwich or as a salad bowl. If one opts for a salad bowl, the pita is an extra $1.00. The sandwiches and bowls are priced by weight. We ordered a salad bowl with 3 crispy fried chickpea balls and a whole wheat pita on the side and got a small tasting of hummus and Yogurt, Dill Tzatziki for approximately $2.00.

There were many other toppings to enjoy including Baba Ganoush, Chickpea Salad, Pickled Dill Cucumbers, Hummus and Pickled Beets.

We couldn’t help ourselves and had to order a small side of Frieten (fries) for $2.35. The doubled fried potatoes had a nice crispness and tenderness on the inside. We tasted the fries with tahini, Dutch mayo and garlic cream. We loved the mix of garlic cream and mayo together.

Whenever we are back in Davis, we’ll have to stop in again for some quick fried goodness.Amsterdam Falafelshop on Urbanspoon

Bergamot, Somerville

Somerville’s Bergamot, is a mid-to-high end restaurant which focuses on progressive American cuisine in a warm cozy neighborhood setting.  Please note that Bergamot is located in between Harvard Square and Inman Square, so T-riders will have a short walk or bike ahead of them. There’s a free private parking lot around the corner from the restaurant or street parking for those driving.

Chef Keith Pooler and front manager Servio Garcia have figured out how to do innovative and fancy fare at relatively modest price points, with informal good service. They incorporate classics with seasonal, local, and sustainable ingredients to give you visually satisfying dishes you want to photograph before eating. They deliver it all without breaking the relaxed somewhat casual mood.

They also have $39 blackboard special of three or four courses (available from 5:30 to 7 pm on Thursdays-Saturdays daily as well as Sunday and Mondays all evening). Did you also know Julia Child once lived only two blocks away at 103 Irving Street? That’s where she lovingly taped all those early great cooking shows we are so familiar with!

The servers are pleasant, attentive and non-obtrusive. Never was our waitress ever overbearing. I never had to ask for water, our table was “decrumbed” between courses, and napkins were folded when we returned from the restroom. I also noticed that the volume of the chatting was not overwhelming.

The space is intimate and has a certain casual elegant flair to it. However I will say that I would not categorize this as a romantic restaurant because there are far too many tables in the space, nonetheless I still find Bergamot delightful and would return to check out their specials.

The kitchen is open and easy to see from the dining area. Not a lot of restaurants do this anymore and it is pleasant to see the cooks working in the kitchen.

They serve honey butter with their fresh bread. I find it is worth mentioning as it was one of the highlights of our visit.

The complimentary amuse bouche from the chef was white bean puree and bacon jam on toast. This was so unbelievably good. I had seen bacon jam before but never tried it.

Potato leek soup with pepper relish $11 This usually comes with crispy oxtail in the center, but was omitted.

The portion of soup itself was huge since it came in a very large lipped bowl. It was warm, hearty and comforting.

Fresh seasonal vegetable bruschetta

My dining companion loved this take on bruschetta. The fresh marscapone that was smeared on the bread added a creamy backdrop for the dressed vegetables.

Heirloom tomato salad with goat cheese

I enjoyed this tomato starter thoroughly because of the high quality of the tomatoes. They were sweet, ripe and flavorful.

Butter-poached gulf of Maine hake, lobster, sweet potato, fried leeks, creole sauce $27

This dish was outstanding. It had been a very long time since I had eaten hake but everything in this plate was well-thought out and complimented each other.

Beef flanken, yukon gold potato, escarole, vidalia onions, root vegetable marmellata, beef jus $29

This was a great beef plate. The beef was done to perfection, a good medium rare, yet was well seasoned with a slightly salty exterior. The potato was pan-fried to give it a crisp outside and soft inside.

We had the Carrot cake for $9. I’ve never been a big fan of carrot cake, but this one was quite delicious according to my dining companion. It looked dense and packed with carrots despite it’s petite and unassuming appearance. They said it was one of the best they have tried without the overly sweet thick cream cheese frosting to distract them. Instead there was little dollops of sweetened cream cheese bavarois.

The Honey almond cake for $8 was simple, slightly sweet and delicious. The drizzle of lemon cream reduction and blackberries gave the almond cake a nice fresh taste. Although I could make something similar at home, I think that this version is worth getting.

The assorted seasonal fruits for $8 was a refreshing and light way to end dinner. Every piece of fruit was eaten and none of it was under ripe.

Istanbul’lu, Somerville

Istanbul’lu is a beautiful, small intimate cafe that focuses on simple Turkish home cooking. It’s next door to PJ Ryans in Somerville’s Teele Square. It’s great fun to sample the tapas or mezedhes, small dishes of finger foods. That way you get a variety of tastes. It’s also a great place for vegetarians as many of the dishes do not have meat. The decor is simple and the waitstaff’s attention can vary depending on how busy it is. Wait times can be long if you come during peak dining times. The cafe does not take reservations.

Complimentary homemade flatbread with red pepper sauce

The bread is fresh and soft, with a texture akin to Portuguese sweet bread. It easily soaks up the garlic and red pepper puree.

Sarma, stuffed Turkish grape leaves served with yogurt

These were quite delicious. Stuffed with rice, pine nuts, currants, onions and tomatoes. You can taste the hint of cinnamon.

Imam Bayaldi, baby eggplant stuffed with sauteed vegetables

I enjoyed the succulent baby aubergine. The slightly caramelized onions added sweetness, the green pepper slices added crunch, and the tomato slices added a cool freshness. Note this tapas dish comes cold because it is customary to eat cold and moist foods in the summer.

Kirmizi Beyaz, roasted red pepper stuffed with beyaz peynir

Beyaz peynir is a white Turkish sheep’s milk cheese. The texture is smooth and creamy, like a Greek yogurt only with a more condensed thickness. The sweetness of the roasted red pepper and the tangy beyaz peynir go well together.

Mucver

This zucchini fritter is delectable. It’s one of my favorite Turkish appetizers to eat. Make sure to get each bite covered with fresh tomato, lettuce, and yogurt sauce.

Paca Soup, lamb, yogurt, and garlic village-style soup
I’ve had this soup at other Turkish restaurants and it’s one of my favorites. The flavor is simple. The small, tender chucks of savory lamb easily fall apart when you bite into them. The cool yogurt adds a creamy mouth-feel.
Pistachio burma

Turkish rolled shredded phyllo dough stuffed with ground pistachios, syrup is poured over the burma as it cools after baking. Intensely sweet yet crispy at the same time.

Turkish coffee

Strong slightly sweet dark coffee flavored with spices (cardamom I think) that was so good. Served with grounds in the bottom.

Walnut burma (above), Baklava (below)

Late night after being stuffed at Istanbul’lu, I ended up eating this yellow crimson watermelon with friends. It’s actually sweeter than regular red watermelon. It tasted slightly like honey.

Trina’s Starlite Lounge, Somerville

Located in Inman Square, this place does not look like the kind of place you’d naturally frequent. Formerly the Abbey, it looks like a plain black wall. You’d never really notice it while walking past. Inside it’s dimly lit with a cool, dark, unusual vibe. One side is the dining area and the other is the bar. Bathrooms are clean, pink and pretty. Service is attentive and friendly. Trina’s also does a brunch on Mondays, not Sundays, so restaurant industry people pack the place! I’ve heard they have this bourbon based drink that comes with a slice of bacon dipped in chocolate and finished with fleur de sel! They also have daily specials for the dog of the day and the blue plate special. The dog of the day was a Hawaiian hot dog with pineapple and the blue plate special that day was chicken parm.
BBQ Sweet Potato Chips and Dip
Sweet crispy crunchy slices of goodness that fool you into thinking you might be eating something semi-healthy! I wish they gave you more dip though.
Summer Pasta with Shrimp spring veggies, Parmesan and balsamic vinegar

Soft springy pasta with peas, red pepper, squash, tender shrimp covered in a parmesan sauce and a generous drizzle of tangy balsamic vinegar and fresh chives. I would come back for this dish alone. I might even try to recreate it!

Baked Haddock sweet potato and bacon hash, sauteed spinach

Flaky tender baked white fish, check. Sauteed spinach that isn’t drenched in oil, check. Finely julienned slivers of sweet potato with crispy bits of bacon all well seasoned that doesn’t look like the typical chunky breakfast hash, check. This entree was really delicious. The hash was a pleasant surprise.

Calamansi Collins Thai basil gin, calamansi, soda water

A refreshing summer drink. Good in concept, not sure if it was so great in execution however.

Shaddock Bols genever, Aperol, St. Germain, lemon juice

The bartenders here don’t play! They serve you strong drinks but this one was sweet and tart, a good balance.
