Marino’s Pizza, Lyons Falls, NY

One of the best pizza’s we have ever enjoyed is in Lyons Falls New York. We have heard about Marino’s for years with the superlative that is one of the best and we were in disbelief. How could a small village have the best pizza? Marino’s Pizza, next to Boonedocks and The Edge Hotel just does. The perfect balance of crust, aromatic sauce and cheese is why. Super gooey cheese, a great amount of acidity from the tomato sauce and an all around great pizza makes every bite delicious.

We often do carry out and pick up a pepperoni and onion pizza and this time around enjoyed a large pepper and onion pizza.

There were 40 wings, buffalo and bbq, with meaty wings and drumsticks and really nicely slathered sauces. Everyone seemed to enjoy the wings.

Green Street Grill, Cambridge

Green Street in Cambridge is a bar and restaurant that is tucked away behind a series of music lounges and shops off of Mass Ave. It looks unremarkable and looks like it needs to be renovated on the outside, but on the inside, it’s got remember-able charm. To some it’s a dive bar that looks like a veritable dump, to others it’s a great place to discover new beers and try classic and new cocktails. For me, it’s certainly the latter. This neighborhood fixture is place that I will be exploring more often as time allows.

Service was excellent and the waitress took the time to let my dining companion try several samples of the many beers they have on tap. I immediately settled on the drink below:

Parisian Orchid- Reyka vodka, St. Germain elderflower liqueur, fresh lemon and pineapple juice $8

I love anything with St. Germain or pineapple in it, so the moment I saw this on the menu I had to try it. This would be a great drink for warmer weather since it is so refreshing yet not overly sweet. However being the St. Germain/pineapple nut that I am, I’d have this anytime.

Musque de Provence soup- red curry creme fraiche, toasted pumpkin seeds $9

This simple starter is delicious. The red curry creme fraiche added another mildly creamy spicy bite while the pumpkin seeds added crunch. I could eat this for a light lunch or dinner alone with a side salad. I love to make pumpkin soup at home so I will be trying to recreate my own variation of Green Street’s.

Fried chicken wings- nuoc cham, basil, coriander $8

These chicken wings weren’t deep fried, but pan-fried. They were crispy, savory with a hint of herbs and sweetness in the background. Be forewarned, the nuoc cham can leave you with sticky fingers!

Pan-roasted Gianonne chicken- rosemary & potato gratin, swiss chard, roasted shallot-sherry jus $22

The boneless chicken was quite good. The meat was firm but tender and well seasoned with salt and pepper. The skin was delightfully crisp from being held face down in the pan with a brick on top to add pressure.  The gratin was well made- paperthin slices of potato layered with rosemary, cream and cheese. The top was nice and crunchy, how I like it.

Special of the Night- Braised beef short rib, creamy garlic mashed potatoes, grilled broccoli rabe

My dining companion throroughly enjoyed this dish because he didn’t say one word while eating it. Not one. I had a few bites and was struck with how comforting this dense short rib in beef jus was. The garlic mash was great for sopping up the extra jus.

I will be returning to explore the extensive cocktail list and try other items on the menu. There’s something for everyone on the menu and the price points are variable depending on the items you order. If you ask nicely, there is a special A-to-Z cocktail list that has classic egg flips and well executed classic drinks like the Zombie.

Umai, Newbury Street, Boston

We had a ScoutMob discount for Umai so we walked over next to Upper Crust and Tanorama on Newbury to try the new sushi restaurant. Despite the discount, I would go back for full-priced Japanese fare. The biggest challenge the restaurant has is all the other competitors in the immediate area. I really hope they drive more interest and more people patron this place.

The restaurant is spacious with the sushi bar in view upon entrance. We sat at one of the window display tables. It was interesting to sit in the display area where usually products or merchandise are in the window.  It felt like we were literally on display and in a fish bowl for shoppers to see.

We tried the fried boneless chicken $6.75. The chicken was so tender and the batter was very crispy. The two dipping sauces soy garlic and ginger were both so tasty. They really enhanced the flavor of the chicken.

We ordered a Spicy Tuna Roll $5.50 and Spicy Yellowtail roll $5.50. All the rolls were the right amount of white rice and fresh high quality fish.

To try something different, we ordered the mango, salmon, cream cheese and avocado $7.50. The creaminess from the avocado and cream cheese really countered saltiness of the salmon and sweetness of the tropical flavored mango. The well scored salmon sushi was also really tender. The Fried tofu (inari) $3.00 had a sweet soy flavor and was a little pocket for the moist rice. The Idaho maki $5.50 had the right amount of crisp tempura sweet potato filling.

Bonchon, Allston

Korean fried chicken = AMAZING. Bonchon is located near Blanchard’s and across from White Horse Tavern and serves some of the best chicken, specificlaly Korean’s fried chicken out there. (Dare we say better than Southern chicken?) We hate to perpetuate this common perception, but whenever we go to KFC and Popeye’s, there are adorable seasoned Asian couples eating fried chicken. We love our fried chicken!

There is a side dish of coleslaw that cuts the spice of the chicken. Bonchon was a  great experience and I wish I took some soy garlic chicken wings home. Our waiter was the most pleasant, patient and thoughtful server.

The chicken itself is double fried with the choices of soy garlic, mild spicy, hot spicy and bbq sauces. Unfortunately, being so packed, the chicken strips were sold out. (This means another trip is warranted!)

This Bonchon also has sushi such as spicy tuna, spicy yellowtail , eel avocado and a unique hummus sushi.

The sweet hummus sushi is a mix of sweet potato tempura, hummus, cucumber with unagi sauce

The crispy philly maki is cream cheese, salmon, cucumber, avocado, lightly battered and deep fried. o. multi tobiko, scallion, red onion. with unagi sauce, sweet chili sauce

Pork buns (similar to Momofuku)

House Fried rice (the best I’ve ever eaten anywhere because of the balance of the flavors, vegetables and tender chicken)

Kushiyaki Combo A: bacon & scallop, chicken, chunks, scallion

Tiramisu mochi
