We are a huge fans of fried chicken, yes it is not great for you, but as children a bucket of KFC was a treat and a multi-year addiction was born. We have heard ravings about Gussie’s Chicken and Waffles and decided it was time.
All of Gussie’s waffles are homemade, cooked to order and served with sweet cream whipped butter and warm homemade brown sugar syrup. For an additional $1.00, one can get pure maple syrup, get the pure stuff. Although the menu offered so many combinations with eggs, other proteins, various types of waffles and chicken pieces, we went for the Downtown Special One southern fried chicken thigh or drumstick and one original waffle for $7.79. The chicken was super tender on the inside and nicely seasoned and crisp on the exterior. Supremely good. The waffle was the right thickness, and we can now understand why folks pair chicken with waffles. Salty, buttery and sweet, the taste trifecta.
We will definitely return to Gussie’s to sample the Country Cornmeal Waffles, Cheddar Cheese Grit Cakes with scallion and Buttermilk Fried Chicken Strips served with honey mustard.
