How to Make Apple Oatmeal Raisin Cookies
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
Step One: Cream the sugars and butter in a large bowl.
Step Two: Add the eggs, vanilla extract, and water. It may look separated, but don't worry.
Step Three: Add the dry ingredients and mix.
Step Four: Add the apple pieces and raisins. Mix until the dough is uniform. Don't overmix.
Step Five: Use a cookie scoop and scoop out 32 cookies. Put them on the baking sheet, leaving a few inches between each one. These don't spread much, so if you want flatter cookies, press them down at this point.
Step Six: Put the pan in the oven and bake for 12-14 minutes or until the edges are golden brown.
Top Tip
Chewy dried apples work better than freeze-dried apples. Freeze dried apples don't give the cookies as much of an apple flavor as regular dried apples do.
Substitutions
- Fresh apples - Technically, you could use this recipe with fresh apples. Granny Smith apples would add a nice pop of flavor. Just be sure to cut them into super small pieces and know that they'll have a bit more crunch when it comes to the final texture.
Variations
- Spices - It's super simple to change the flavor of these homemade cookies. Adding apple pie spice or pumpkin pie spice will really enhance those fall flavors!
- White chocolate chips - Mixing in a few white chocolate chips is a fun way to add a touch of sweetness. Or, you can swap out the raisins for white chocolate chips.
- Craisins - We turn to dried cranberries more often than raisins. If you do, too, feel free to swap those in.
- Caramel - Love caramel apples? Try our Caramel Apple Oatmeal Cookies, which use fresh apples and caramel bits.

Equipment
To make these yummy apple cookies, you need to have a large mixing bowl, two large baking sheets, parchment paper, measuring cups, and a cookie scoop.
Storage
Once the cookies are baked and cooled, store any leftovers in an airtight container. These can be kept at room temperature or in the fridge. These cookies can also be frozen by adding them to a freezer-safe container. To thaw, place them in the refrigerator or at room temperature.
Common Questions
You can but I haven't tested it. I would replace the water and ¼ cup of the butter with ½ cup applesauce. It's also one of the healthy ways to reduce fat. It can also cut down on added sugar. Since applesauce has natural sweetness, you can also reduce the sugar to ¾ cup total.
Applesauce is one of the most common methods, but a lot of people also enjoy the flavor of adding maple syrup. Reduce the brown sugar to ¼ cup and replace the water with ½ cup maple syrup. I can't test every variation I offer so now you get to be the recipe tester. But I always think they will work based on my experience in the kitchen.
