Ingredients
Unbaked pie crust - The crust will bake with the rest of the ingredients at the same time.
Apples - Choose your favorite type and flavor of apples.
Sugar - This helps to sweeten the apples.
Lemon zest - A bit of citrus pairs really well with the sweetness of the apples.
Salted butter - Helps to make the crumble topping.
Rolled oats - This is the base of the topping.
Flour - Makes the oat topping not as thick and has a better texture.
Brown sugar - For sweetness.
Cinnamon - For flavor.

Variations
Change the type of apple slices - Apple crumb tarts are really versatile in how they can be made. This tart recipe can be made with Granny Smith apples, Pink Lady apples, Gala apples, and any other type. If you want a sweeter apple, stick to Honeycrisp or pink lady apples. You'll love that you can try so many different flavors.Â
Add fruit - Add in another fruit like pears, blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, or cherries. I love tart cherries in this Cherry Apple Crumble.
Use a homemade pie crust - I like to use a premade crust to save time, but if you have a favorite pie crust recipe, use that. The pastry crust is an important part of this crumble recipe, so make sure that you use one that you like.
Add caramel sauce - Why not turn this into a caramel apple crumble tart? As the tart cools, drizzle a little bit of caramel sauce over the top.
Don't forget toppings - You can also add maple syrup, a scoop of vanilla ice cream, or even a bit of sugar and ground cinnamon to the top of this yummy pastry tart.
Common Questions
Can I use canned apple filling?
You can, but it you want a crisp crust, the apple filling has a lot of liquid in it, and it won't actually let the crust crisp up all the way. The best thing to do is follow the recipe card and use fresh apple slices.
Using an apple filling will make this tart taste more like a traditional apple pie, which is fine if that is what you're going for!
Can I make mini apple crumble tartlets using this recipe?
Absolutely. All you would need to do is buy the premade mini crusts or shells and fill the same with using the ingredients. I'd chop the apples into small pieces because slices and large clumps aren't going to fit.
You will also need to adjust the baking time to make sure that they don't burn.
How do I keep my apple slices from turning brown?
If you want to prep the tart a bit before baking it, just add the apple slices and a little bit of lemon juice to a large bowl. These two ingredients will help to keep the apples from oxidizing and turning brown.
