Variations
Add toppings - Putting these cookies in a bowl and topping them with a scoop of vanilla ice cream sounds pretty delicious! You can also drizzle various chocolate syrups over the top or even a teaspoon of hot fudge.
Add chocolate chips - You can easily turn this recipe into a chocolate chip lava cookie dessert by adding chocolate chips. Then the cookie surrounded the lava center will also be filled with little bursts of chocolate.
Add a scoop of peanut butter - If you're a peanut butter lover, these is always room for peanut butter to be added.
Use truffles - Instead of chocolate discs, add truffles or even homemade hot fudge sauce to the center. Or sandwich two cooked cookies with some chocolate ganache.
Common Questions
What happens if I overbake these cookies?
While these cookies will still be edible if you overbake them, keep in mind that the chocolate wafers in the middle will be absorbed if they're overcooked.
The discs will melt, and the chocolate will then go into the rest of the cookie. This means that the cookies will have a delicious chocolate flavoring, but there won't be anything in the middle to give the cookies that lava effect.
Just pay close attention to the directions on the recipe card below, and you should have no issue at all creating the perfect lava cookies.
How do I scoop batter to make smaller cookies or giant cookies of the same size?
Using a small cookie scoop will give you the same portion of cookie dough each time. You can actually use any size of the ice cream scoop that you want to scoop out the batter.
Do I have to line the baking sheet?
If you don't add parchment paper to the baking sheet, then there is a possibility that the cookies will stick. You don't want to risk losing any of the chocolate cookies on the cookie sheet if you don't have to, so adding a piece of parchment paper is a great idea.
How do I store these delicious chocolate lava cookies?
Once these cookies cool down to room temperature, store them in an airtight container or wrap them in plastic wrap. This will keep them fresh to enjoy the next day.
These can be kept at room temperature or in the fridge. It is up to you. If you want to freeze these cookies for later, just add them to a freezer-safe bag and store them in the freezer. Move them to the fridge to thaw, and then warm them up in the microwave.
Can I eat these cookies cooled down?
You will want to eat them warm to have the lava effect. While you can eat them cooled, you won't enjoy the texture of a hot fudge center unless they are warmed. Popping them in the microwave for a few seconds does the trick.

So for your recipe it doesn't say to cream together the sugars, butter and eggs, then add the vanilla then add the flour mixture to the wet mixture, so can you further explain, or is the way you mentioned, proper...thank you.
Taryn
I make these the way the directions read. Since you are using softened butter you don't need to cream it with the sugar. I mix the dry ingredients, then add the wet ingredients, as stated.
