Ingredients
- Flour - I use regular flour for this recipe.
- Oats - Old-fashioned oats or quick oats both work in this.
- Brown sugar - For a rich flavor and to sweeten the dough.
- White sugar - For more sweetness.
- Salted butter - This needs to be very soft to make the cookie dough.
- Peanut butter - You can use natural peanut butter or crunchy; either works.
- Milk - Helps to thin the dough.
- Vanilla extract - Adds a nice vanilla flavor.
- Salt - Just a pinch is needed to enhance the other flavors.
- Mini M&Ms - For fun colors and added crunch.
- Mini chocolate chips - I use mini semi-sweet chocolate chips.

How to Make Monster Cookie Dough

Step One: Stir together the oats, flour, and brown sugar.

Step Two: Mix in the soft butter, peanut butter, vanilla extract, milk, and salt. Mix until smooth. Fold in the mix-ins.

Step Three: Scoop into balls on a parchment-lined baking sheet, if desired. Enjoy now or refrigerate for later.
Top Tip
Many recipes call for heating flour to kill any bacteria or contaminants. I do not do this. We have never gotten sick from raw flour.
If you would like to heat-treat the flour to kill bacteria and contaminants, you may. Microwave the flour for 1 minute, stirring after 30 seconds. Allow to cool before proceeding.
Substitutions
- Chocolate - If you want to use dark chocolate or white chocolate chips for this recipe, go for it.
- Unsalted butter - If all you have on hand is unsalted butter, you can still use it and offset it by adding just a bit of extra salt in the process.
Variations
- Reese's pieces - Instead of M&M's, you could add Reeses - or you can add both.
- Peanut butter cups - If you're a fan of all things peanut butter, chop up some peanut butter cups and add them.
- Chocolate-coated - Coat these in melted chocolate for an amazing truffle!

Equipment
To make the dough, you only really need a measuring cup, a large bowl, and a spoon for stirring. You can use a stand mixer, but you don't have to.
Storage
After the dough is made, store leftovers in a bowl and cover with plastic wrap, or add everything to an airtight container. Keep it stored in the fridge until you are ready to eat. You can also freeze this dough for later.

Common Questions
You have options! You can roll it into cookie dough balls or bites, or leave it just like it is, and eat it like a dip. Just add more milk as needed for a dippable consistency. I've sliced apples to dip into them for a healthier addition, or even used pretzel sticks, graham crackers, and mini cookies to dip and eat.
I don't recommend it. The texture isn't quite right when baked. To make regular monster cookies it would need eggs and baking soda or baking powder.
You can. Some people think that making it in advance and letting it chill actually makes it better. You can combine all the ingredients and then store them in the fridge in a sealed container. You can store it like it is, or go ahead and roll the dough into balls - it's totally up to you. Then, when you're ready to eat, just grab and enjoy.
