This Mint Lemonade Recipe is refreshing and simple! Made with three simple ingredients (plus ice and water) - you'll be enjoying a glass of lemonade during a hot summer day in minutes! This cold drink has the best sweet mint flavor.Â
If you're like me, you like to add lots of ice to your lemonade recipes. This is to make it as cold as possible for as long as possible. I've found that the key to a refreshing summer drink is to have flavor combinations of mint and lemon - which is what this fresh lemonade has exactly!
You can make a giant pitcher of mint lemonade to sip on during a hot day or whip up a little bit for the perfect summer drink. There's just something fun and flavorful and making your own lemonade - and my mouth waters just thinking about the flavor.
Follow the simple steps on the recipe card below to get started. It's such a simple drink!

Ingredients
- Boiling water - You'll want to boil the water in a saucepan on the stovetop to get it hot. It needs to be hot so that it dissolves the sugar.
- Sugar - Added to give sweetness to the drink mixture.
- Fresh mint leaves - This is where the fresh mint flavor and scent come from.
- Fresh lemon juice - I prefer to squeeze my own using fresh lemons. But you can buy premade lemon juice at the grocery store if needed.
- Ice cubes - Needed to keep the lemonade nice and cold.
- Cold water - This is optional, depending on how much the ice melts. It is a great way to tone down some of the lemon and mint flavor if it's too strong.
See recipe card for quantities.
How to Make this Mint Lemonade Recipe
Just a few ingredients plus some ice and water are all you need!
Step One: Mix the boiling water with the sugar in a mason jar or heat-safe glass. Stir until all the sugar is dissolved. Add the mint leaves and steep for 10 minutes. Strain the leaves out.
Step Two: Pour in the lemon juice. Add ice and stir. Add cold water if needed. Garnish with lemon slices.
Top Tip
If you want to make this and serve the next day, be sure to stir right before serving. The mixture will settle at the bottom of the pitcher or glass, so stirring is a must.
Substitutions
- Simple syrup - Adding flavored syrup is a great way to add flavor. If you want to cut down on white sugar or not add as much sugar, honey, brown sugar, or maple syrup can be a great option.Â
Variations
- Sparking water - Adding flavored sparkling water can make this into a refreshing drink with a boost.
- Crushed ice - You can turn this into a frozen mint lemonade recipe easily by mixing ice cubes or chunks with the lemonade mixture in the blender. A big batch of this would be super fun for parties!Â
- Herbs - Try swapping out the mint for lavender to make a lavender lemonade. Or try rosemary or thyme instead.
- Fresh fruit - Adding fresh berries into this fresh mint lemonade on a hot day not only looks pretty but tastes great.
- White rum - Turn this into a 21+ drink by adding a little bit of your favorite rum or vodka. Great for special occasions.

Equipment
You'll need a small saucepan, large pitcher, mesh strainer, and drinking glasses to make this simple lemonade recipe.
Storage
While I do think that this recipe is best served fresh, you can make it and store it in the fridge to serve later that day. This is a good way to chill it and get it cool before serving. Be sure to stir it again before drinking.
Common Questions
You bet! The biggest thing to remember about adding syrups is that, typically, they're going to be stronger in flavor than the real deal. Adding a little bit of syrup will go a long way in adding mint flavor - so don't add too much!Â
The same goes for peppermint extract. All you need is a drop or two.
Yes, the hot sun will melt the ice cubes quickly, so I recommend that you don't add any ice at all to the drink until right before serving. In fact, it's a better idea to add the ice cubes directly to the serving glass, and then pour the lemonade over the top.Â
One of my favorite things to do with my own homemade lemonade is to freeze some of it in ice cube trays and then use those ice cubes in the drink. That way, as the ice cubes melt, they're just melting into lemonade, which won't water down your drink!Â
So yes, you can freeze lemonade in a creative and fun way!Â
