Ingredients
Cream of Coconut - Creamed coconut is a little different than both coconut cream and coconut milk. The main difference is that it is sweetened with sugar. It should be available in your local grocery store near the drink mixes.
Pineapple Juice - I normally buy the little cans you see in my photos. They are the perfect size for a batch of mocktails.
Frozen Pineapple Chunks - Adding frozen pineapple enhances the pineapple flavor immensely.
Ice Cubes - The more you add the icier the drink will be. I try to keep it icy while still allowing the blender to work.
How to Make a Pina Colada Mocktail
If you're looking for an easy way to make your own virgin pina colada mocktail at home, then this is the recipe for you! All you need is pineapple juice, cream of coconut, some ice cubes, and frozen pineapple chunks.
Step One: Simply combine all the ingredients together in a blender. It can be helpful to make sure the liquid is at the bottom.
Step Two: Blend until smooth and creamy in a high-speed blender.
Step Three: Pour the virgin pina colada recipe into glasses.
Top Tip
These are traditionally served in a tall glass such as a hurricane glass but you can really use any glass you have at home. We used large water goblets.
Step Four: Garnish with whipped cream and a maraschino cherry, if desired.
Variations
With the tropical flavors of pineapple and coconut as the base, you can experiment from there. My favorite pina colada recipes take this as the base and add a twist.
Garnish - Fresh pineapple slices, a pineapple wedge, or some shredded coconut flakes are other great choices for a garnish. Adding a cocktail umbrella is another fun way to celebrate the tropical flavor.
Rum Extract - For a rum flavor in a non-alcoholic drink add a splash of rum extract or white rum extract.
Coconut Extract - For a stronger coconut flavor simply add a splash of coconut extract.
Vanilla Extract - Adding a few drops of vanilla enhances the other flavors in the drink.
Dairy-Free - If you leave off the whipped cream this is naturally dairy-free and vegan.
Lime Juice - To cut the sweetness add a few drops of fresh lime juice.
Thinner Cocktail - If you are having trouble blending the virgin piña colada recipe add a splash of coconut milk or coconut water.
Ice Cream - To turn this into an indulgent dessert put a scoop of vanilla ice cream into the glasses before pouring in the non-alcoholic pina colada.
Common Questions
What is a virgin pina colada?
A virgin piña colada is a tropical cocktail made without alcohol. It is traditionally made with pineapple juice, coconut cream, and ice blended together for a refreshing beverage. The non-alcoholic version of a classic pina colada allows those who don't imbibe to still enjoy the flavor of this delicious treat.
Where was the pina colada invented?
The pina colada is a tropical cocktail made of rum, coconut cream, and pineapple juice. Its sweetness and refreshing flavor have been enjoyed by many since its invention. The origin of this popular tropical drink has been subject to debate for decades, but most experts agree that the pina colada was invented in Puerto Rico in 1954.
Legend has it that Ramon “Monchito” Marrero Perez created this frozen beverage at the Caribe Hilton Hotel’s Beachcomber Bar located in San Juan. Monchito had been experimenting with different drink recipes when he perfected what we now know as the classic pina colada. He served his creation to hotel guests for over 35 years until his retirement in 1989.
What does virgin mean in drinks?
The name 'virgin' means that there isn't any alcohol in the drink, which makes it available to everyone regardless of age or preference.
Is there a non-alcoholic substitute for rum?
Rum has long been a popular alcoholic beverage for a variety of drinks, from the classic rum and coke to the more complex mojito. But what if you don't want the alcohol? Is there any way to enjoy the flavor of rum without drinking it?
Fortunately, there is. Adding rum extract is a way to mimic the rum flavor without alcohol.
Non-alcoholic versions of rum can be used in many cocktails and recipes as an alternative to its alcoholic counterpart. Although these non-alcoholic rums tend to be sweeter than their boozy equivalents, they still offer a distinct flavor that allows you to replicate many classic recipes without any of the alcohol. In addition, they provide a good option for those who prefer not to drink alcohol or are looking for something lighter and less sweet than traditional sugar syrups.
Can I make a pina colada without a blender?
You can shake the ingredients in a cocktail shaker if you need to. I would recommend using crushed ice if you are going to go with this method.
