There is something fun about being able to mold chocolate with a surprise hidden inside. Kids and adults all love food within food - and it just adds such a great look and taste to the various holidays throughout the year.
Let's not forget that the pink and red sprinkles scream Valentine's Day, and the added hearts on top really are the icing on the "cake."
The fun part about making hot chocolate bombs is that they look hard but really aren't. The hardest part about this delicious drink recipe is being patient for everything to mold and harden!

Ingredients
- Semi-sweet chocolate chips - You can use any flavor that you want, but these are my favorites.
- White chocolate chips - This adds sweetness and is perfect for drizzling on top.
- Hot chocolate packets - You'll be using hot cocoa mix as the filling for the hot chocolate bombs.
- Sprinkles - I like to use the most common colors for the holiday, which are red, pink, white, and gold.

How to Make Valentine's Hot Chocolate Bombs
With a sphere mold and a little melted chocolate, you can make adorable hot cocoa bombs in minutes.
Add the semisweet chocolate chips to a microwave-safe bowl and melt them. Melt the white chocolate chips in a different bowl.
Coat the cocoa bomb molds with ¾ of the chocolate. Set aside the bowls that contain the rest of the melted chocolate.
Let the chocolate that has been added to the molds harden.
Fill one side of the half-circle mold with hot chocolate and a small amount of sprinkles.
Put the other half of the mold on top to create a circle, and use some of the melted chocolate as glue to help them stick together.
Drizzle the top with chocolate and then add sprinkles. Carefully remove from the molds.
To use: Add the hot cocoa bomb to a glass or mug full of hot milk. Give them a little stir, and watch the chocolate melt away, releasing the hot chocolate powder and sprinkles. Stir, and enjoy!
Top tip
The trick to melting chocolate in a microwave is to do it slowly. Microwave for 30 seconds, and stir. Microwave for 15 seconds, stir again. Once the chocolate chips are 75% melted stop heating them and just stir. The residual heat should melt the rest.
Substitutions
- Flavored hot cocoa - You can use mint hot chocolate here or any flavor that you want to add to the middle.
- Sugar - Instead of using sprinkles on top, you can coat with red or pink sugar as well.
- Candy melts - You can use white candy melts or pink or red candy melts if you prefer.
Variations
- Marshmallows - Instead of adding sprinkles to the inside of the chocolate cavity, you can add mini marshmallows.
- Chocolate chips - You can also swap out the sprinkles and add mini chocolate chips, too.
- Heart-shaped - Don't forget that you can also use heart-shaped silicone molds to create your pink hot chocolate bombs, which is a super fun way to have the cocoa powder inside of a delicious chocolate heart.
- Color - You can use some simple food dye and turn the chocolate shell pink, creating epic pink hot cocoa bombs. You can also do this using red candy melts, as well.

Equipment
The biggest thing that you'll need to have on hand are the molds to make the circles. You can buy them online.
Having the silicone molds offers a bit of flexibility and helps to ease the completed circles once they've hardened.
Storage
Since you will be making several Valentine's Day Hot Chocolate treats, you can save some for later.
Once they are removed from the mold, store them in a sealable bag or airtight container. They don't have to be stored in the fridge, but they do need to be kept away from places that are heated or hot.
Common Questions
You can add the mixture to either. I prefer adding it to milk because it's a richer flavor, but it works well with hot water, too.
No, they don't have to be stored in the fridge. Keep them in an airtight container and store them at room temperature.
The problem likely lies in the thickness of the chocolate coating. Be sure that you're coating the sides of the mold well so that it's not thin or missing sections.
Also, be patient with the chocolate hardening. If you try and remove the molds too soon, the mold will break apart and you'll have a mess on your hands.
These Valentine's Day cocoa bombs make the best gifts! Gifting them to your family and friends in a creative way is so much fun to do. For extra fun, add these great gifts to cute bags with some conversation hearts sprinkled about. You can also package them with other fun Valentine's Day treats as well!Â
Another perfect way to gift these Valentine's Day hot chocolate bombs is to give them everything that they need to make their own mug of hot cocoa right away. A cute mug with the milk chocolate bomb right inside is an adorable idea. You choose the best way and make it happen - and have fun with it.Â
Yes! Candy melts and chocolate chips come in flavors that make it easy to change the flavor of the cocoa bombs. Adding cinnamon red heart toppings is a fun way to add a cinnamon flavor.
Any way that you make them, you can easily add them to a mug of warm milk to enjoy!Â
