How to Make a Blackberry Mocktail

Step One: To make the blackberry puree, thaw the berries in the microwave. Alternatively, you can leave them out at room temperature for an hour.

Step Two: Press through a fine mesh sieve to remove the seeds.

Step Three: Measure 2 ounces of puree. If you have extra, you can save it for another drink.

Step Four: Add the ice cubes to a wine glass. Squeeze in the fresh lime juice and add the blackberry puree. Top off with the lime soda. Stir.

Step Five: Add a fun garnish like a lime slice and a sprig of basil. Serve immediately.
Top Tip
For the smoothest mocktail, take the extra minute to strain the blackberry puree. Blackberries have a lot of seeds, and removing them gives the finished drink a much nicer texture.
Also, add the soda last and stir gently so you don't lose all those bubbles.
Substitutions
- Club soda - You can use club soda or any type of fizzy water that you want to add. Either will be a huge hit.
- Fresh blackberries - If you don't have frozen, you can still make the puree using fresh blackberries.
- Lemon juice - You can use lemon juice in place of lime juice.
Variations
- No Bubbles - If you don't want bubbles, just use plain water and simple syrup to sweeten this mocktail.
- Ginger Beer - Swap the lemon-lime soda for ginger beer for a spicier blackberry drink. Most ginger beer sold as a mixer is nonalcoholic, but check the label if that's important to you.
- Honey - Add a little honey or agave nectar if you'd like a sweeter drink. It will dissolve best if you stir it into the blackberry puree before adding the cold ingredients.
- Mixed Berry - Make the puree with strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, or a combination of your favorite berries.
- Fresh Herbs - Gently muddle a few mint or basil leaves in the bottom of the glass before adding the other ingredients.
- Alcohol - If you do want to make a cocktail, you can always add some vodka, white rum, gin, or tequila.

Storage
This blackberry mocktail is best made fresh and served right away while the soda is still bubbly.
To prep ahead, make the blackberry puree and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. When you're ready to serve, add the puree, lime juice, ice, and lemon-lime soda to the glass.

Common Questions
Absolutely. The recipe itself contains no alcohol, making it a fun drink for both kids and adults.
Not necessarily. If you don't mind the blackberry seeds, you can skip straining and use muddled or smashed blackberries instead. Straining takes an extra minute, but it gives the mocktail a much smoother texture.
Yes. Multiply the blackberry puree and lime juice by the number of servings you need and combine them in a pitcher. Chill until serving, then add the lemon-lime soda right before serving so it stays bubbly. Add ice to individual glasses rather than the pitcher so the drinks don't get watered down.
Absolutely. Replace some or all of the lemon-lime soda with club soda or sparkling water. Taste it and add a little sweetener only if needed.
You can add fresh mint leaves, or even just dip the rim of the glass in sugar before pouring in the drink. If you're feeling really fancy, you can't go wrong with one of those cute little drink umbrellas.
