Ingredients
- Gala apples - Clean the apples and then peel and slice them.
- Red tart cherries - I buy them canned in water. Be sure to drain off the liquid.
- Sugar - For sweetness.
- Old-fashioned oats - The main ingredient to make the topping of this classic apple crumble with cherries recipe.
- Butter - Adds flavor and holds the topping ingredients together to create that crunchy texture.

How to Make Cherry Apple Crumble
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Step One: Add the apples, cherries, and ½ cup sugar to an 8X8 baking dish. Add 1 cup of oats, butter, and 3 tablespoons of sugar to a food processor. Pulse until crumbs form. Add the rest of the oats and pulse more until mixed.
Step Two: Cover the cherries and apples with the oat topping. Put the pan in the oven and bake for 45-50 minutes or until the apples are soft and the topping is golden brown.
Top Tip
Drain the cherries well. Otherwise, the fruit crisp will have too much liquid in the bottom of the pan!Â
Substitutions
- Cherries - Have fun choosing the type of cherries that you want to use. Sour cherries or sweet cherries work well for this recipe.
- Apples - You can use Gala apples, Granny Smith apples, Pink Lady, Honeycrisp apples, or any other varieties.
Variations
- Add extracts - Adding a little bit of vanilla extract or almond extract is a great way to add more flavor to the fruit filling.
- Use fresh cherries - If you have ripe cherries, use them. They'll add an amazing taste to the fruit mixture. Just be sure to have a cherry pitter on hand to get rid of pits.

Equipment
To make this apple cherry crisp, you'll need a large bowl, a food processor, and an 8X8 baking dish.
Storage
Cobbler recipes make great leftovers! After the cooking time has completed, let the crumble cool to room temperature, and then add any leftovers to an airtight container. When you are ready to eat again, you can reheat and eat or enjoy it chilled.
I don't recommend freezing this recipe because the crumble tastes better fresh. You can, however, freeze the apples and cherries to make this recipe fresh later down the road!
Common Questions
Nope - not at all. Some people don't want that extra step or can't have it, so you can absolutely make this dessert and skip adding the topping. You can easily eat the fruit mixture just like it is, drizzle it with maple syrup for a boost of extra sweetness, or even use it as a topping for ice cream.Â
This is common but can be avoided. I always slice and prep my apples ahead of time, and I drizzle them with lemon juice to avoid browning. This also helps give the dish a fun little burst of citrus flavor as well!Â
Absolutely. I tend to like using fresh fruits or canned fruit, but you can take the sweet factor up a notch and use cherry pie filling. Just know that it will change the nutritional value of the recipe since it likely has other sugars and ingredients added to it.Â
