Ingredients
- Brown sugar - This gives the caramel sauce that dark brown coloring and adds the sweet factor.
- Heavy cream - Creates a thick, rich texture.
- Salt - This can be optional. (but if you do add it, now you'll have a 3 ingredient caramel sauce recipe, too!)
See recipe card for quantities.
How to Make 2 Ingredient Caramel Sauce
Step One: Add all of the ingredients to a medium pan.
Step Two: Cook over medium heat on the stove, stirring frequently, until the mixture thickens. This will likely take about 8-10 minutes.
Step Three: Add a little bit of salt if you want.
Step Four: Pour into a glass jar and store it in the fridge. It will be thin at this point but will thicken as it cools.
Top Tip
You can store this dipping sauce in a mason jar and keep it in the fridge. This is one of my favorite ways because it's easy to pop it open and eat a spoonful. I suggest hiding it in the back of the fridge so your family doesn't eat it all.
Substitutions
- Cane sugar - If you don't want to make this brown sugar caramel sauce, cane sugar can be a delicious addition.
Variations
- Maple syrup - Adding a little bit of maple syrup to the hot caramel can make a fun and sweet flavor.
- Vanilla extract - Pour in a tad bit of vanilla extract to make delicious vanilla caramel sauce!
- Dark brown sugar - You can really turn this into a deep amber color by adding dark brown sugar, and it also adds fantastic flavor.

Equipment
Caramel recipes like this don't need a ton of equipment. You can make this easy homemade caramel sauce with a wooden spoon, non-stick pans, and your stovetop!
Storage
Once the caramel cools, store the creamy caramel sauce in heatproof container and keep it in the fridge. That way, you can reheat it in the microwave to thin it out for the next time that you have a craving.
I don't recommend freezing this recipe since the main ingredient is heavy whipping cream. It will not have a good texture once it is frozen and then thawed.
Common Questions
It's going to be thicker, yes. But keep in mind that when it is warm, it will be a thinner texture, which is when you want to pour it or use it. As it cools, the sauce will thicken.Â

You can use it for special occasions or any dessert recipe. I also think that it's fun to make and add to my morning coffee.Â
During the fall months, I'll make this and dip apple slices into it.
You can. If you want to use coconut cream in place of the heavy cream, this will give the caramel dip a nice coconut flavor and taste. You can also add extra sea salt for a salted caramel sauce as well.Â
The biggest thing to keep in mind when making this simple caramel sauce is that you need to be stirring basically the entire time. If you keep stirring, and then put it into a jar, you can then rinse out and wash the pan, making it much less of a hassle to clean up.
