Ingredients
- Salted butter - If you don't have salted, you can use unsalted butter, but add just a tiny pinch of salt.
- Peeled and diced apples - Choose your favorite type of apples, like a Gala apple or a Granny Smith apple.Â
- Vanilla extract - For flavor.
- Milk - Helps to thin out the cake batter a little bit.
- Brown sugar - For added sweetness. If you choose a tart apple you might want to increase the sugar a bit.
- All-purpose flour - The main ingredient needed to make the batter in the mug.
- Ground Cinnamon - A must if you're making cinnamon apple mug cake!
- Baking powder - Adds a fluffy texture to the apple cake.

How to Make Apple Cinnamon Mug Cake
Step One: Add the butter and apples to the bottom of the mug. Put the mug in the microwave for about 45 seconds or until softened.
Step Two: Stir in the vanilla, milk, and brown sugar. Add the flour, cinnamon and baking powder. Stir until combined.Â
Step Three: Put the mug back into the microwave for 1.5 minutes.Â
Step Four: You can eat the cake right from the mug or invert it onto a serving plate. Just loosen it with a knife first.
Top Tip
Cooking the apples first in the butter is necessary for them to be the right texture. Don't skip this step.
Substitutions
- Maple syrup - To cut down on the added sugar, you can use maple syrup or honey in place of the brown sugar. This will change the sweet factor of the apple pie cake, but it will still be delicious.
Variations
- Caramel sauce - Don't forget to have fun with the toppings of this apple pie mug cake! Once the cooking time has passed, remove the cake from the microwave-safe mug and add toppings. This fluffy cake would be great with caramel sauce, ice cream, or whipped cream. Perfect for your sweet tooth.

Equipment
All you'll need to make this treat is a large mug that is microwave-safe, measuring spoons, and a spoon to stir!
Storage
I consider this one of my same day recipes to eat and enjoy. Since it's fast and simple to make, I always make it when the craving strikes. I don't rememmend cooking this and saving it for later. It's best eaten fresh!
You can, however, make it and then reheat it on a microwave-safe plate, if need be. The texture might be a bit less fluffy, but the flavor should still be there.
For this reason I also don't recommend making and freezing the mug cake, either.
Common Questions
You can, or you can use as little of the apple as you want. The more apple that you use, the more apple flavoring it will have. Just be sure that you clean and peel the apple, and then add whatever amount that you want into the recipe after that.Â
If you're thinking of making this into an apple crisp cake recipe, you can easily use oatmeal, butter, and brown sugar mixed together to put on top of the cake as well. It may not get quite as crispy as you want it to, but it will add a fun flavor and texture!Â
The best way to tell if the mug cake is done cooking is to use the toothpick test. Insert a clean toothpick into the middle of the mug cake. If the toothpick comes out clean, the mug cake is ready. If there is wet batter on the toothpick, it needs a little bit more cooking time.Â
