These Sweetened Condensed Milk Chocolate Chip Bars are made using simple ingredients and are perfect any time of year. Quick desserts like this are simple to make and are perfect for sharing with family and friends.Â
This bar was one of my favorites to make as a teenager. I first saw the recipe in a Pillsbury Best of the Bake Off cookbook my mom had. I love that you don't need many different ingredients to make these chocolate chip cookie bars.
These are similar to 7-layer bars, magic bars, or Hello Dolly bars. The difference is that these use a lot of chocolate chips instead of many different toppings.
I'll call them anything as long as I get to grab and eat a few of these easy dessert bars. (It's important to note that while some people call them different names, they are different recipes - but they do look quite similar!)
This quickly became one of my favorite recipes because of the flavor of this rich dessert. I assure you that this is one of the best desserts and flavors that you can make - you'll be hooked!

- Semi-sweet chocolate chips - You'll need to use this ingredient in two different parts of the recipe.
- Sweetened condensed milk - Grocery stores have multiple options, so pick your favorite brand.
- Egg - Binds together the ingredients.
- Vanilla extract - Adds flavor.
- Salt - Salt enhances the other flavors in the bars and balances the sweetness.

Top Tip
If you don't have a food processor, you can cut the butter by hand as well as mix together the ingredients using a hand mixer.Â
Variations
- Chocolate chips - Change the flavor of this classic magic cookie bar recipe and vary the chocolate chips. Classic magic cookie bars are these but with coconut flakes, butterscotch chips, and nuts added. You can use also use peanut butter chips, white chocolate chips, or other flavors.Â
- Add toppings - The next time that you make this dessert, add toppings! Toffee bits, crumbled chocolate bar pieces, milk chocolate chips, some of your favorite nuts, and even shredded coconut or toasted coconut would be perfect! Some people like mini marshmallows, too!

Equipment
To make this recipe, you'll want to have a food processor, a small bowl, a large bowl, and a baking dish. Once you have all the equipment, it's as simple as following the steps on the printable recipe card.
Storage
Don't let this great recipe go stale! After the bars have been baked and cold, simply add a lid and keep them stored in the fridge. This is the best way to keep them as fresh as possible.
You can also freeze the bars by adding them to a freezer-safe container. To thaw, simply move the pan to the fridge for a few hours.
Common Questions
They're similar but not exact. The process and ingredients will vary a bit as seven layer bars tend to have more steps and a few more ingredients to them - hence the name. I will say, however, that these cookies are very similar and close - which is why people will refer to them by that name.Â
Absolutely. If you want to add a crust variety, go for it. One option could be to use crushed graham crackers to get that buttery crust flavor and taste. Crushed up shortbread cookies are another delicious option.
