How to Make Chocolate Granola
Preheat a skillet over medium heat.

Step One: Add the sliced almonds, oats, and coconut.

Step Two: Cook over medium heat for 5-8 minutes, stirring often. You want to lightly toast the nuts.

Step Three: Stir until they are golden.

Step Four: Turn the heat to medium-low and then add the vanilla extract, coconut oil, and sugar. Stir until it melts and coats the oats and nuts. Watch carefully so it doesn't burn.

Step Five: Sift the cocoa powder over the top of the granola and stir.

Step Six: Let it cool right in the skillet. Mix occasionally. Once it is barely warm, add the chocolate chips and mix.
Top Tip
If you want bigger pieces of almonds, you don't have to use sliced ones. You can use whole almonds or chopped almonds.
Variations
- Add-ins - If you want to add more ingredients to your granola, you can. Options could be small pieces of dried fruit, freeze-dried berries, pecans, walnuts, chia seeds, sunflower seeds, or even some pumpkin seeds.
- Chocolate - While I love the flavor of this granola, you can use other options like cocoa nibs or even dark chocolate to make it dark chocolate granola.
- Sweetener - Feel free to use brown sugar or coconut sugar in place of the white sugar. Or swap in half a cup of honey or maple syrup for the sugar.

Equipment
To make this healthy chocolate granola recipe, you need to have a pan or skillet, a heat-safe rubber spatula, and a large bowl. You may also want to have parchment paper and a baking sheet if you want to spread the granola out as it cools.
Storage
Once this homemade granola has cooled, store it in an airtight container or a mason jar. This keeps it fresh for longer. It can also be kept at room temperature.
I don't recommend freezing this recipe, even though it's simple and quick to make, because freezing and thawing the oats may change the texture.

Common Questions
That's the great thing about making your own granola. Eat it how you like it. It can be added to smoothie bowls or paired with milk, including homemade almond milk, for a healthy chocolate cereal. You can even eat out the big clusters, and use the rest as a topper for ice cream.
Typically, the longer the granola sits after being made, the softer the oats become. If you're worried about not liking the softer texture, using any leftovers as a mix-in with yogurt or as cereal is a good idea.
If you head to the grocery store, you can buy protein oats for this recipe. Grocery stores also have tons of options for protein yogurt or Greek yogurt, which is a good choice because the homemade granola can just be used as a topper for the yogurt, giving you a healthy option and a simple boost of protein for your day.

Chocolate Granola Recipe
Ingredients
- 3 cups rolled oats
- 1 cups sliced almonds
- 1 cups coconut
- ½ cup sugar
- ¼ cup coconut oil
- 2-3 teaspoon vanilla
- 2 tablespoon cocoa powder
- pinch salt
- ¼ cup chocolate chips
Instructions
- Preheat a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add the nuts, oats, and coconut. Cook, stirring often, for 5-8 minutes or until they are toasted.
- Turn the heat to medium-low. Add the sugar, coconut oil, and vanilla to the pan. Stir until it melts and coats the nuts and oats. Watch carefully, or it can burn.
- Sift the cocoa powder over the granola and mix. Stir in the salt.
- Transfer to a large bowl. Let cool, mixing occasionally. I let this granola cool in a bowl so any unmelted sugar will melt and so some clumps will form.
- Once it is barely warm, mix in the chocolate chips.
