Just three ingredients and 10 minutes are all that you need to make this delicious Caramel Mousse recipe. The caramel flavor pairs perfectly with cakes, cupcakes, or even on its own. The next time you need a sweet treat for a special occasion, use this recipe to wow all your family and friends!
Delicious recipes that are simple to make are my favorite. And when it comes to caramel desserts, this one is worth the few minutes and two bowls needed. It's the perfect texture to savor and enjoy right off the spoon.
Pair it with your favorite cake recipe or enjoy a small bowl full of the sweet mousse. However, you decide to eat it is totally up to you!Â

Ingredients
- Heavy cream - This adds richness and flavor to the mousse recipe.
- Cream cheese - This helps to make it creamy and adds thickness. Let it sit out for about 15 minutes before starting because room temperature cream cheese is easier to mix.
- Caramel sauce - It must be thick for this recipe to work. Caramel syrup will not give the right texture.
See recipe card for quantities.
How to Make Caramel Mousse
Step One: Add the heavy cream into a big bowl and whip until stiff peaks form. Put that into a different bowl. Whip the cream cheese (in the large bowl you used for whipping the cream) until it is soft, and then add the caramel sauce.Â
Step Two: Mix until light and fluffy. Add â…“ of the whipped cream and mix. Fold in the rest of the whipped cream slowly. Scoop or serve in serving bowls or with your favorite dessert.
Top Tip
Make sure to fold in the whipped cream slowly and gently. If it deflates you won't have a fluffy mousse.
Substitutions
- Swap in melted chocolate - Leave out the caramel sauce and mix in hot fudge or melted chocolate. You can easily make this recipe into milk chocolate mousse or dark chocolate mousse with a ton of delicious chocolate flavor.
Variations
- Add salt - You can add a bit of that delicious sweet and savory flavor to this mousse by using salted caramel sauce for this recipe. Or use regular caramel and add salt to taste. Salted caramel mousse would be delicious!Â
See this Chocolate Chip Bread Pudding for another fun recipe that pops with chocolate flavor.
Equipment
I recommend using an electric mixer to easily whip the cream. It would take a lot of elbow grease to whip the cream by hand.
A piping bag is also great for having to pipe into a serving bowl or on top of a baked dessert.
Storage
Once you make this homemade mousse recipe, storage is key! Add the finished product into an airtight container or cover it with plastic wrap to keep the air out. Place the bowl in the fridge and keep it nice and cool.
I don't recommend freezing this recipe since the base ingredients are dairy. This is because once it freezes and is then unthawed, the texture of the mousse will not be the same.
Common Questions
While it might be tempting to try that, I recommend following the recipe card and using caramel sauce. It does need to be thicker for this recipe to work, but the problem with using melted caramel candies is that they tend to get harder as they cool.Â
The caramel sauce has a nice soft texture that stays the same consistency. This is important because it gives the mousse the perfect texture for serving.Â
It's possible to overmix almost everything when it comes to baking. The good news is that this simple mousse recipe gives you visual indicators when it's done so that you can stop mixing.
Once you start noticing stiff peaks forming when mixing with the hand mixer, that is your cue to not mix anymore and to proceed with the rest of the recipe.Â
Mousse is one of those dessert recipes that you can enjoy on its own or pair with other fun treats. Adding mousse to a cake recipe and turning it into a chocolate caramel mousse cake sounds just about perfect! We use our coffee mousse in this Cappuccino Cake Recipe but swapping in caramel mousse would make it taste like a caramel macchiato!
You can use this as a way to make a yummy cookie sandwich, or as a topper for caramel cakes. The options are endless! Topping brownies, making sandwich cookies, and even dipping pretzels in mousse are all good options!Â

It sounds so good, but you state the nutrition amounts are for 1/6th of the recipe? That’s 24.7 g carbs for 1/6th of the recipe? WAY too much for me.
Taryn
The carbs are almost all from the caramel sauce. To make this low carb just swap in a sugar free caramel sauce.

How far in advance can this be made?
